Ohio State University 의 Alan Hirvela 박사는 “Writing both delights and confounds most of us. It delights us because it allows such unique and powerful ways of not only expressing ourselves but representing ourselves. (글쓰기는 우리자신을 표현하고 우리의 모두를 대변하는 파워풀한 것)” 이라고 말합니다.
U.S.C.의 명예교수 Stephan Krashen 박사는 “글쓰기는 우리로 하여금 생각하게 하고 문제 해결력을 갖게 도와줄 수 있다. (Writing can help us think through and solve problems.)” 라고 했습니다. 시간적 여유가 있는 여름방학은 글쓰기에 적절한 시기입니다. 여행한 경험, 스포츠, 자원봉사, 연극, 박물관 방문, 독서 등 평소에 바빠서 하지 못한 액티비티로부터 경험한 일을 writing journal (작문 공책) 에 글로 써 보기를 제안합니다.
글쓰는 제목도 자녀가 직접 선택하도록 기회를 주십시오. 여러 장르의 다양한 독서를 통해 다른 사람들의 삶을 배우고 자녀가 자신의 삶과 꿈에 대해 생각해보는 시간을 갖게 되는 것입니다. 자신의 꿈(dream) 과 장래 희망, 존중하는 인물 또는 영웅(hero) 에 대해 써볼 수 있습니다. 자녀의 목소리와 선택(voice and choice)의 기회를 주세요.
책을 읽고, 읽은 내용에 대해 토론해보고 글을 쓰는 시간을 적어도 일주일에 한 번씩 30분 할애하도록 해보세요. 학생들이 읽은 책의 내용에 대해 비판적(critical) 판단력으로, 숙고해 보며(reflective), 그 느낌을 자신의 글로 써보아야 됩니다. 자녀가 읽는 책을 쓴 저자에 대한 연구(research)도 해보고 저자의 의도(author's intent) 와 우리들에게 주는 메시지(message)에 대해서도 글로 써보도록 자녀들에게 권장하세요.
소설, 역사적 인물, 혹은 미술, 음악, 과학과 같은 창조적인 작품 중에 자신에게 준 영향력에 대해 설명해보도록 해보세요. (Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work as in art, music, science etc. that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.)
자녀들의 글쓰기는 반드시 다음의 writing process를 거치도록 해야 합니다.
① pre-writing (글쓰기 전 생각)―(thinking about it)
② drafting (초안)―(writing it down)
③ revising (재검토 수정)―(making it better)
④ editing (교정)―(making it correct)
⑤ publishing/sharing(발표)―(sharing it with others)
초등학생들이나 영어를 배우고 있는 중, 고 학생들은 다음과 같이 Story Tree를 만들 수도 있습니다. 우선 나무를 크게 그립니다. 나무속에 다음과 같이 써보세요.
Write:
1. One word that describes the main character(주인공을 묘사하는 한개의 단어)
2. Two words that describe the mood of the story(스토리의 분위기를 설명하는 두가지 단어)
3. Three words that tell where the story takes place (setting)(이야기의 장소와 때, 즉 배경을 말해주는 세가지 단어)
4. Four words that tell the plot of main event of the story(이야기의 본 줄거리를 말하는 네가지 단어)
5. Five words that describe the main conflict in the story(이야기의 주된 갈등을 묘사하는 다섯가지 단어)
6. Six words that describe the message of theme of the story(이야기의 주제가 전하고자 하는 메시지를 여섯가지 단어로 표현하기)
Reading과 Writing은 떼어놓을 수 없는 바늘과 실과 같습니다. 읽기는 모든 학과목에서(Reading in ALL Content Areas) 다 해야 됩니다.
